Grammar School in Brighton VIC
As the eighth Headmaster of BGS, I acknowledge the legacy forged by those outstanding educators who came before me and the many achievements of our boys and staff over the years. The second ladder below shows the position of Brighton Grammar School when all schools are ranked by their 2021 VCE 40+ percentage measures, . If two schools have equal 40+ percentages, their 40+ score counts are used as a tie-breaker.
Learning readiness paves the way for academic success as evidenced at yesterday’s Secondary School assembly with a number of boys presented with Academic Colours, and at Junior School assemblies with boys receiving awards across the term. Developing a strong sense of organisation, combined with a regular routine, helps students to be confident, on time and prepared for their classes. "The posting of last Friday is anathema to everything we stand for at Brighton Grammar School," he said. Headmaster Ross Featherston wrote to parents on Wednesday and said the school had identified a small number of other boys who were also implicated. He said they had been disciplined and were receiving "re-education and counselling". The school is reeling from the scandal, and reassuring parents and students that it will not tolerate "disrespectful behaviour on any social media".
Participants will learn aspects of competitive secondary school rowing, learning single sculls and quad sculling techniques. This week classroom teachers met with parents to discuss the boys’ development as well as their targeted learning intentions. Thank you to the parents who were able to make the time to participate in these important discussions. Also this month, students who are learning Chinese and their parents appreciated a taste of Chinese traditional instruments and folk music. It was a journey back to old times, in which people connected with themselves, others and surrounding world through music. This event is open to all high school students interested in learning more about mental health support and resources through detailed discussions led by Lifeline and Orygen.
Congratulations to Will Tan, Year 8 Crowther, for taking home the Gift this year. Day and the messaging of this simple premise is truly powerful – taking the time to check in on others can be a small but important gesture that shows we care. We see our students demonstrating their care of others, like showing up to support their mates in their endeavours, saying congratulations or commiserations when needed, or helping out with school work. Thank you to those parents who supported the School and students on so many levels across 2022.
The week was dedicated to presenting and selecting the winners, spanning three consecutive days. Research demonstrates that after completing field trips, students possess more knowledge, have stronger critical thinking skills, and can have a greater interest in the topic. With our Year 12 students beginning exams at the end of October, it is a timely reminder to students in other year levels that their exams are not far away. Timetables for each year level’s examination periods have been emailed to all students. Exams for boys in Years 7-11 will kick off this week with the Year 9s having commenced today.
Unfortunately, in many schools – especially primary schools – male teachers are a rarity. In some schools, boys are accused of having ‘behaviour’ problems or lacking concentration just because they are not always good at sitting still and listening. This week began with a wonderful BGS Valedictory tradition for our Year 12 boys, Beating the Bounds. It is always one of our highlights of the year as we gather as a school community to recognise this important milestone . Finally, with research consistently showing that engaged students make the best learners, our Crowther Centre has developed an effective learning method to actively involve the boys in their own learning and personal development. The Age sent questions to the 11 most-sought-after schools asking them to detail how student places were allocated.
‘You can judge how a boys’ school is performing by how well they are singing’. This is an ideal program for those who want extra support with their swimming as the lessons are tailored for the individual student. We wish our musicians well with the upcoming Generations in Jazz this weekend. We saw the impact this can have on our boys on Saturday when a large number of Junior Schools students came to the Crowther, some there to cheer on specific members of our First XVIII Football team who they have worked with through the OELP.
Students will receive a summary report of their responses and links to further support and information on career development. The School will receive a summary report of all Year 10 students’ responses; however, students will not be identifiable. Year 10 students have been invited to participate in GENERATION, a new study of young Australians to understand youth transitions from school to post school, including a focus on the impacts of COVID-19. It illustrates the diverse talents of our staff who inspire our boys to challenge themselves, set goals in life and most importantly follow their dreams. We signed agreements with Vaughan Constructions to begin work on our new Centre for Science, Creativity and Entrepreneurship and you may have already noticed activity on the site in recent days.
Recognise that explicitly teaching students about safe and responsible eSmart behaviour is essential in the lives of students and is best taught in partnership between the home and the School. Digital Technologies are electronic devices, systems and resources that generate, store or process data. Have conversations with your son about his accomplishments or feedback he is given. Most importantly, he will give an address to our community on Wednesday 15 March.
Ms Mitchell and Mr Nott said their desire to enrol Harrison in a good private school was driven by their own experiences. “Often schools will say, yes, we’ve got 1000 on the waiting list but they go back to that waiting list after the year has started and it’s disappeared, vapourised," he said. "People have gone elsewhere." But he said they were not required to reveal the size of their waiting lists or to cap their fees to the rate of administration. The boys' schools are St Kevin’s College in Toorak, Scotch College in Hawthorn, Xavier College in Kew, Trinity Grammar in Kew, Camberwell Grammar, Melbourne Grammar and Brighton Grammar. These schools charge a higher-than-average $154 to be put on their waiting list.
In 1823 a schoolboy named William Webb Ellis, during a football match at Rugby School, Rugby, England, took the ball in his arms and ran with it on The Close. "Today, we are mourning the loss of a true stalwart of Victorian Rugby, whose generosity and passion for our game at all levels was unparalleled. His absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt throughout our community. Bob was specifically a Member of the Australian Schools Rugby Foundation, Patron of the Victorian Schools Rugby for over 25 years and the founding director of the Melbourne Rebels.
