2018 Coche-Dury Meursault Rouge, France

A shorter version of this article is also published by the Financial Times. For mine the most exciting Meursault wines show a delicacy, transparency, weightlessness with tension while still have a depth and length of flavour to match their standing in the hierarchy from Bourgogne to 1er Cru. Coche-Dury’s only Grand Cru wine is the Corton-Charlemagne, but a handful of the domaine’s other wines are of particular importance. Premier Cru wines from Meursault’s Les Charmes and Les Perrieres vineyards are among the most expensive wines from the Cote de Beaune, and the Coche-Dury Meursault is among the most popular. Low volatility equates to higher price stability, meaning less risk and therefore a better score.
A 1992 Coche Meursault Chevalieres village and a Ramonet Chassagne Morgeot 1993 were together in a flight with a completely forgettable Prosper Maufoux Batard-Montrachet as the third wheel. The first time penfolds v chardonnay I  tasted Coche-Dury was in 1995, with Danish wine friends and some rather colourful wine people and entrepreneurs. I could now recite the usual Coche estate history and its glorious wines, but I won’t.

As I consider the evolving tapestry of Burgundy's vinous offerings, I find that the 2018 Meursault Caillerets captures both moment  and momentum. In the captivating world of fine white Burgundy, the 2018 Meursault Caillerets from Domaine Coche-Dury emerges as a beacon of precision and elegance. Our Process Let us guide you through the process behind investing in fine wine.
Raphaël Coche thinks this will prove reminiscent of the domaine's 2001—in so far as the 2001 drank well in its youth, but despite its youthful precocity, it proved surprisingly long lived. Here, the expressiveness of the vintage meets the tensile, age-worthy Coche style to great effect. He is too much a man of the soil to be called urbane but he is certainly cosmopolitan and very well aware of his place in the wine firmament. I find it endearing that on most of my annual tasting visits to Lafon, Dominique is always so concerned – a bit like a three-star chef – about the responsibility of living up to the reputation of what he produces. For Burgundies and wines in comparable bottles, such as wines from Germany and Alsace, the filling level is indicated in centimeters. Measured from the bottom of the cork to the level of the wine.
This vintage is celebrated for its exceptional balance and depth, featuring a complex bouquet of aromas ranging from ripe citrus to toasted nuts. Its aging potential is notable, with many experts suggesting that the wine has not yet reached its peak, promising further development of flavors and aromas over time. The 1992 vintage from Coche-Dury stands out as a legendary year, particularly for its Meursault wines. This exceptional vintage is highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts alike, due to its remarkable balance and depth. The climatic conditions of 1992 provided the perfect environment for the grapes, leading to a harvest that was both abundant and of high quality.
Fourth-generation vigneron Fabien Coche took over his family’s domaine in 2005. Hailing from one of Burgundies most famed families (Coche-Dury was part of the same domaine until 1940 and is run by his cousin Raphael), Fabien has quickly become the Coche of the current generation making the most waves. His enviable vineyard holdings total nearly 11 hectares spread across Meursault, Monthelie, Pommard and Auxey-Duresses. BWW-The Best Wine of the World-competition is by far the toughest wine  competition on this planet. Unlike any other industry competition, less than 1% of the wines involved will be awarded.

Return to form and though young, very well integrated and quite giving already on both the nose and the palate. Just lacking that matchstick and gunflint reductivity that you get with older Coche... I guess under Raphael's stewardship these wines are more approachable when young but are losing a hint of that ' je ne sais quoi' with some older vintages. This can definitely age though, and will be very good for a long time. Jean-François Coche (and since 1999 his son Raphaël) produces wines that you are often mandated to drink – but all too often for the wrong reason!

The most “common” wine from Coche-Dury is his generic Meursault, which is perhaps not quite as generic as one might expect from the table above. There are in total 7-8 different village Meursaults, all vinified and bottled separately. Vinificationen is fairly traditional, but with quite frequent battonage. Fermentation takes place on oak cask, and the proportion of new oak varies from year to year, but generally Coche-Dury uses quite a lot new oak. In some years they have used up to 50% new casks on the top wines. The wines are raised in barral for 15 to 22 months, and are bottled without filtration.
